Winter Safety Tips

Prior to the beginning of the winter season, you may want to have these items in your car:

  • Small Snow Shovel
  • Window Scraper
  • Blanket
  • Extra Clothing Including Hat and Gloves
  • Battery Booster Cables
  • Flashlight with Extra Batteries
If possible, please try to stay off the roadways as much as possible during a snow storm.

Reduce your speed and drive cautiously. Increase your distance between your vehicle and vehicles ahead and around you. Winter conditions can provide slippery and dangerous conditions. This is especially true during snow storms.

If there is a large snow storm predicted, fill your gas tank.

If you have a cell phone, make sure that it is fully charged and that you have it with you.

Trucks are plowing or spreading sand/salt. Stay back from the vehicle at least 100 feet to avoid problems. Plow trucks often have to back up. There are blind spots in the mirrors. For your safety, do not pull directly behind them. They may not be able to see you.

Do not allow children to make snow forts at the edge of the road.

Do not place rubbish or recycling bins in the street during snowstorms, as they will interfere with snowplowing.
